Hello!
Needless to say, you can tell it's a busy time of year, and time has a way of slipping by.
Hence, the late newsletter!
I will make this short and sweet.
It's May, you are all either making splits, re-queening, or installing new packages this time of year. If you're planning on using them for pollinating services, you probably are done with all that. Remember, the impulse of swarming is strong this time of year too! If you are lucky enough to get a swarm, be sure to ck. it over carefully. You don't need any new diseases or bugs to infest the rest of your hives!
If you're going to be doing comb honey, this is the prime time for that too! Have plenty of supers on! Spring is the best time for that "light" honey in the comb.
Our last meeting was well attended. We had the film from PBS, and a demo done by Doc Diehl, on Pollen patties! Very informative!
He gave us the recipe for the patties: 5 ½ cups of Pollen & 1 cup sugar and water syrup. (this is a 2 to 1 mixture) Roll or pat the dough to ¼ inch thick and put on top bars of the hive, under the inner cover. You can place the patties on paper to roll out and keep it right on the paper when placing it in the hive.
Doc, has extra pollen to sell if anyone is interested. His number is 419-483-1680. or email cdiehl@onebellevue.com
This meeting will be on bee diseases. It’s a "power point" presentation, by OSBA.
We have renewed the website for another year also! Be sure to ck. it out when you can. It's being updated frequently!
Wanted: 4 Frame extractor. Contact me at 419-483-7496.
We voted to do the program of "Exploring Your Back Yard" over at the Sandusky County fair grounds on September 23 & 24th. A great program for the 4th graders of Sandusky Cty.
I need to get this in the mail, so only one recipe this time!
I found this at honey.com!
Chewy Monkey Bars
Combine marshmallows, honey, butter, peanut butter, vanilla and salt together in a medium saucepan. Heat mixture over low heat, stirring constantly. In a 13x9x2-inch baking pan, combine oats, rice cereal, coconut and peanuts. Pour honey mixture over dry ingredients. Mix until thoroughly coated. Pack mixture firmly into the pan. Cool and cut into 24 bars.
See you Monday night!
