MONDAY
7:00 p.m.
Greetings!
Well, by now, you
probably have all the girls tucked in and equipment stored for the winter! Time
to evaluate the past year and make some mental notes(or
if like me, WRITE them down)to make adjustments for next year!
Hopefully you all
got some honey or at least your hives survived the summer with out too much
drama. Your new hives are not likely to give you honey the first year, but
aren’t they a delight to just sit back and watch the little girls make a happy
home! They will try really hard to make some honey to share in the following
years! We all know the obstacles these girls have in their life time, so this
winter study all the info you can, to keep up with all the new techniques and
ideas to make their life a little easier. Being a member of a bee club (like
ours), also helps to keep everyone informed. With the lack of Inspectors to ask
your questions, the clubs are vital to the beekeepers to keep up with all the
new diseases and methods of keeping bees healthy. Thanks for supporting our
club! New members are always a welcome; they don't need to own a hive to join
either! All are welcome to come and learn or share their knowledge of
beekeeping.
It was voted on at
our last meeting to have another "Beekeeping Class"! They decided to
have it in the Spring and the earlier the better. The
reviews were good from the first class and with all the suggestions they are
bound to get better each time! If you know of anyone interested in beekeeping
let them know about our classes!
We will be
labeling the bears we are giving away this Christmas. It was voted to give them
to the local food banks instead of the MSO this year. Members took home some
bears last meeting to fill with their extra honey, so it wouldn't be such a
sticky clean up this year. We will also be taking nominations for officers for
next year. Be sure to come if you don't want an office!
Trivia!
- True or False???
After the Queen Bee lays her
egg, the egg hatches into a tiny baby bee after about 3 days. (72 hrs.)
I've
got plenty of room for recipes!
APPLE CIDER PUNCH
½ gallon apple cider
2 cups orange juice
1 cup lemon juice
¼ cup honey
1 2 ½-inch cinnamon stick
5 whole cloves
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
1½ teaspoons butter
Bring to a boil; cover, simmer for 1 hour.
To serve, strain off spices.
Yields
½ gallon.
HOREHOUND
Horehound (get at health food store
Or an Herbal friend!)
1 lb. brown sugar
2 c. honey
1/2 c. strong horehound tea
Make strong tea from horehound,
strain. Add sugar and honey. Boil for about half an hour, or until a little
drop in cold water hardens, almost crackle stage. Cool, pull as for taffy,
stretch into long strings. Break or cut into pieces. Wrap in wax paper.
(I saw in other recipes where they
used a candy thermometer and cooked it till around 275* )
Very good to use as cough drops for colds and sneezing
See you Monday night!
